Risk Management Strategies for the Global Energy Crisis: The Role of Individuals at Home and in the Workplace

The current global energy crisis is projected to require a recovery period of seven to 12 months. This situation demands comprehensive preparedness not only from the government but also through the active involvement of every individual. By implementing strategic risk management at home and in the workplace, the impact of this crisis can be minimized to ensure economic continuity and social well-being.

Empowering the Work-From-Home (WFH) Initiative
Supporting government directives for WFH implementation is a significant proactive measure. Data indicates that 155,000 civil servants have registered for this initiative since April 15, 2026, directly contributing to an estimated fuel saving of 334,000 liters. The effectiveness of this measure relies on individual compliance with established guidelines, thereby reducing national dependence on oil reserves before the crisis reaches a critical threshold.

Rationalizing Mobility and Transport
A key strategy involves reducing long-distance and non-essential travel. Individuals are encouraged to spend leisure time and school holidays engaging in domestic activities or local recreation. This approach ensures that fuel resources are prioritized for critical needs, such as emergencies, festive celebrations, and fulfilling social responsibilities like visiting parents in hometowns.

Urban Farming: Enhancing Domestic Security
Urban farming, or 'kitchen gardening,' presents a practical solution to fluctuating commodity prices. With the price of vegetables like mustard greens (sawi) rising by approximately 5.6% (RM6.51) in late April 2026, growing one's own produce has become increasingly relevant.

In the Office: Converting decorative landscapes into vegetable patches can foster a spirit of cooperation between management and staff during harvest activities.

At Home: Utilizing hydroponics or cocopeat in limited spaces, such as balconies, ensures high productivity even in the absence of traditional soil.

Financial Discipline and Prudent Investment
Personal economic stability is the cornerstone of crisis resilience. Individuals should strengthen cash reserves and explore investment instruments recognized by Bank Negara Malaysia, such as gold. During this period of uncertainty, it is advisable to avoid new debt commitments including loans for electric vehicles to maintain healthy cash liquidity.

Information Management and Preventing Panic Buying
While the global energy crisis impacts industrial operating costs, it must not be confused with a food security crisis. The public is urged to:

Avoid Panic Buying: National food stocks remain sufficient. Excessive hoarding only disrupts the market supply chain.

Uphold Information Integrity: Exercise responsibility when sharing news. Spreading false reports or wild speculation regarding fuel price hikes and petrol station shortages only triggers unnecessary public anxiety.

Effective risk management requires a paradigm shift in lifestyle and work culture. By practicing energy efficiency, disciplined spending, and discerning information consumption, every individual serves as a vital bulwark against the global energy crisis. This proactive role is essential in mitigating negative impacts within today’s VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) environment, preventing the energy crisis from cascading into further socioeconomic instability.
