POLITICAL LITERACY AND ADVOCACY UNIT (ADVOKASI)

Youth political participation in the country is an important benchmark for the maturity of democracy in a country.  Youth participation in a political formal activity such as election and political organization membership are used as a measurement to the level of youth political participation.  Parliament of Malaysia had approved Ballot Bill, Vote18 in 2019.  Discussions over mass and social media focused on youth privileges and maturity in supporting democracy system through vote in election and democracy in general.

In line with current issue of political socialization among youth, there is a need to form an entity to focus on overall research and advocacy for grass root level on political wellbeing, democracy and citizenship aspiration and sentiment.

An establishment of Political Advocacy and Literacy Unit (ADVOKASI) with a tenacity to strengthen political maturity and literacy among youth in Malaysia and international level.    The effort is very critical as to prepare our youth to become a responsible citizen in order to maintain our country’s sovereignty from a political, social and economy point of view for now and near future.

ADVOKASI mission

ADVOKASI serves as:

• Referral centre for a youth political socialization and citizenship comprehensive measurement
• Program leader for political advocacy, democracy and citizenship among youths nationally and internationally.
• Training and program provider for political studies, democracy and citizenship among youth nationally and internationally

ADVOKASI expected outcome

1. Measuring instrument for political literacy, political maturity and citizenship among youth
2. Current status report on political socialization and citizenship among youth at all level of community
3. Database on political socialization among youth at all level in and out of Malaysia
4. The Policy Paper, action plan, implementation modules and guideline on citizenship and political studies model targeting to shape the direction and intervention programs that can be embraced by various stakeholders to increase political literacy and maturity among youth.
