3 December 2025 – The Institute for Social Science Studies (IPSAS), in collaboration with KUNKWAN International Mandarin Training Centre, successfully conducted a complimentary 2-hour Mandarin Language introductory class. The session began with an initial briefing by KUNKWAN, followed by fundamental Mandarin lessons that introduced several key concepts designed to stimulate interest and enjoyment in communicating in the language. The session was further enlivened by the engaging and relaxed delivery of Mr. Kent Ng Kun Kwan, Founder of KUNKWAN International Mandarin Training Centre, supported by several Laoshi (instructors).
This initiative, introduced by the IPSAS Management, aims to encourage staff members to acquire basic Mandarin communication skills as a proactive measure to facilitate interactions with postgraduate students, particularly those from China. It also serves as a risk management strategy to address communication challenges commonly faced when dealing with postgraduate students from China. Additionally, Mandarin widely regarded today as a global economic language offers added value to staff who acquireproficiency in it. Following the introductory class, several staff members from IPSAS, IDEC, and IPPH registered for the attractive learning packages offered by KUNKWAN, which included scholarship opportunities for participants of the complimentary 2-hour session.
It is hoped that the Mandarin language skills gained will ease the tasks of
lecturers/supervisors, officers, and staff who work closely with students from China. Mastery of Mandarin also serves as a valuable advantage for individuals, especially when certification is obtained from recognised institutions locally and internationally, such as KUNKWAN International Mandarin Training Centre.
