DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES 4

26 September 2023 | ISTAC-IIUM – The Institute for Social Science Studies (IPSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has established a collaboration with the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC-IIUM), International Islamic University Malaysia, to address the generation gap between older and younger generations.

This initiative aims to provide an important platform for intellectual discussions on issues affecting youth well-being from various perspectives, while encouraging meaningful engagement between younger and older generations.

IPSAS Director, Prof. Dr. Haslinda Abdullah, said that the older generation should not underestimate the potential of emerging young leaders who will play an important role in shaping the future.

“In today’s world, I hope that the older generation will not expect young people simply to listen to them. Instead, they should also be willing to learn from the younger generation so that the generation gap can be reduced.

“Generational differences are natural. However, it is important to engage in discussions together so that communication between generations remains transparent and open, enabling both younger and older generations to understand each other’s different perspectives, values and needs,” she said.

Prof. Dr. Haslinda also expressed the view that the older generation should not disregard the opinions of young people. Instead, greater youth participation and engagement should be encouraged in order to create a more prosperous future for the nation.

In addition, IPSAS UPM is collaborating with ISTAC-IIUM through a distinguished lecture series focusing on youth well-being. The initiative is organised to provide an important platform for intellectual discourse on issues affecting youth well-being from various perspectives.

Meanwhile, she said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UPM and IIUM is intended to strengthen the working relationship between the two institutions and expand initiatives that benefit the younger generation.
