Gen Z = The Strawberry Generation: Sensitive Does Not Mean Weak

By : WIDAD EMIR BINTI MOHAMAD ARRIF EMIR

In recent times, discussions about the behaviour and attitudes of Generation Z more commonly known as Gen Z have become increasingly active. It is undeniable that some people view this generation negatively, often labelling them as a group that is “cepat koyak”. But is that really true? Let’s take a relaxed and open look at this topic.

There have been conversations on social media linking Gen Z to the term “Strawberry Generation.” This metaphor originates from Taiwan and describes something beautiful on the outside but soft and delicate on the inside. But why are they compared to strawberries?

Strawberries are known for their beauty, bright red, attractive, and favoured by many. However, even a slight pressure can cause them to bruise or collapse. This mirrors the common perception of Gen Z as sensitive, easily affected, stressed quickly, and overwhelmed when faced with life’s pressures. But it is important to remember that this is merely a social perception within certain contexts, not an absolute truth about all Gen Z individuals.

In reality, this generation is far from weak. Instead, they are more attuned to their emotions, more willing to acknowledge when they are not okay, and more open to seeking help. Their sensitivity is not a flaw but a form of emotional intelligence that is increasingly valued in today’s society.

Just as strawberries require careful handling, Gen Z grew up in an era of advanced technology and convenience. They were raised with the internet, smartphones, artificial intelligence (AI) to help complete assignments, food delivery apps like GrabFood, and Google for instant answers. From the outside, their lives may appear comfortable. However, they too face significant pressures: rising living costs, increasingly competitive education and career pathways, social media saturated with social behavioural issues, and rapid technological change. Their challenges may be different from previous generations, but that does not make them any less resilient.

Strawberries are also considered a premium fruit. Because of their price, people naturally expect high quality. The same applies to Gen Z, who are often described as a generation with high expectations and low tolerance. They want meaningful work, supportive leadership, a healthy work environment, and work–life balance. At first glance, these may seem “demanding”, but from a more positive perspective, Gen Z are simply setting boundaries, prioritising their well-being, and choosing what aligns with their values. They are not being defiant; they are refusing to accept environments that are harmful or unproductive.

It is true that strawberries spoil quickly if not stored properly. Similarly, Gen Z may experience burnout or lose interest more easily when placed in environments that do not support growth. They are fast-paced, enjoy new experiences, and want to see progress in what they do. With empathetic, open, and communicative leadership, their potential can develop remarkably.

Although strawberries are delicate, they remain a favourite fruit: bright, appealing, and versatile. Likewise, Gen Z are creative, expressive, technologically skilled, and quick learners. Many of today’s popular trends, digital businesses, and viral content originate from their ideas. In the digital age, these strengths are significant advantages.

So, is being part of Gen Z or being labelled the Strawberry Generation are something negative simply because they are seen as “cepat koyak”? Not at all. This social metaphor represents a generation shaped by its era and unique experiences. Strawberries may be soft, but they are also sweet, valuable, and well-loved. The same can be said of Gen Z. They are sensitive, yet empathetic. They have expectations, but these stem from a strong awareness of self-worth. They may appear fragile, but with the right environment, they can create an extraordinary impact.

This generation rejects toxic work cultures not because they are weak but because they uphold strong principles regarding mental well-being and self-respect. They are creative and influential across various fields; from technology and digital content to social innovation. Perhaps it is time for us to shift our perspective; instead of comparing them to how we were raised, let us appreciate the diversity between generations.

What we sometimes view as unusual or unfamiliar may actually be their way of adapting to a world that is more complex and demanding than before. The truth is, Gen Z is not a generation that is weak. Let see through a more positive lens, they are a generation that knows what they want, dares to speak up, and is unafraid to be authentic. Clearly, these are qualities that deserve appreciation, not criticism.
