The agricultural industry is a crucial sector for humanity, and its sustainability greatly depends on the role of youth. Undoubtedly, today’s younger generation is less interested in engaging in agriculture, leading to a decreasing desire to pursue agriculture as a career. As a result, in many countries, the agricultural sector is dominated by adults.
Historically, after gaining independence in 1957, the agricultural sector became the primary engine of Malaysia's economic growth. Abundant natural resources and unused land have been significant blessings for the country to thrive through the production of major commodities. Many people view agriculture as a source of livelihood, and Malaysia has become a leading global producer of rubber and palm oil. Additionally, local companies have flourished in contributing to the development of the agricultural sector, while smallholders play a vital role in rice, fruit, and vegetable cultivation.
In 2023, Malaysia's manufacturing sector generated RM1.8 trillion, involving 2.37 million individuals, showing growth from the previous year. In contrast, the agricultural sector recorded an output of RM96.7 billion for food-based products in 2022, with the number of workers decreasing to 1.54 million. This indicates the ongoing dominance of the manufacturing sector, driven by industries such as petroleum, electronics, and food processing. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector, despite being crucial for food security, faces challenges in maintaining the workforce and achieving significant production growth.
Malaysia recognizes the importance of agriculture for food security, and the prospects for this sector in the coming decades are seen as positive, despite facing various challenges. To ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector, youth must play a vital role. According to current data, youth represent 43.8% of Malaysia's total population, but less than 20% are involved in agricultural-related jobs. This is a concerning figure, and more concrete efforts are needed to encourage youth to consider agriculture as a career choice.
Various factors have been identified as contributing to the negative perception of agriculture among the younger generation, particularly traditional agricultural activities, which are often viewed as tedious and less appealing. This view is further reinforced by the outdated farming practices inherited from previous generations, causing the sector to be seen as low-status among youth. Consequently, many young people are turning to other sectors that appear more promising in terms of career prospects and social status. Local studies have also shown the negative attitude of youth towards agriculture. However, interesting findings also indicate that although youth have a poor view of agriculture, they still believe that it can provide substantial income. Therefore, more strategic steps are needed to understand the intentions and behaviors of youth in considering agriculture as a potential career choice.
Although negative perceptions still dominate, there is significant potential to change youth perspectives on the agricultural industry through more innovative and relevant approaches. Modern agriculture that employs the latest technologies, such as smart farming, automation, and green innovations, can attract the younger generation, who tend to prefer high-tech and dynamic careers. Introducing these elements in agricultural education and training, along with demonstrating the potential for high income through agricultural entrepreneurship projects, can transform how youth view this sector. More importantly, the agricultural sector should be promoted as a field that is not only essential for national food security but also as an industry with competitiveness and broad economic opportunities. Therefore, comprehensive efforts involving the government, educational institutions, and the private sector must be implemented to create an agricultural ecosystem that captures youth interest, ensuring that agriculture remains relevant and viable in the future.
In conclusion, the role of youth in the agricultural industry is key to the continuity and sustainability of this sector in the future. Although the interest of the younger generation in agriculture is declining due to negative perceptions and low social status, there is great potential for agriculture to become a profitable career if approached correctly. Continuous efforts must be made to raise awareness, change perceptions, and provide opportunities and support to engage youth effectively in contributing to the nation's agricultural industry.
